But it does provide us with the inspiration for beds like the Liberty and Liberty bedroom furniture or the Mackintosh bed. Most of the beds made during this period would have been small oak beds and not the super king size ones that are popular today. As an alternative to oak, Revival beds have chosen to make these Arts and Crafts style beds in pine and polish it in a Pale Oak wax.

The Arts & Crafts movement used traditional techniques and materials.

Arts and crafts furniture makers were keen to show their appreciation of things natural. To do this they employed techniques such as Marquetry often depicting flora and fauna which was very in keeping with the ethos of the movement. Inlaying with indigenous pear wood was also popular. We've taken this idea and included it in the design of the Liberty bed. A series of pear wood plaques have been set into the headboard and foot board of each bed.

Our links page has many useful and informative links on the Arts & Crafts movement, Art Deco design and the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The Liberty super king size bed fits the bill perfectly

William Morris, one of the founding fathers of the Arts and Crafts movement and Morris and Co. once said "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"… We think a Liberty super king size bed fits the bill perfectly. The slender tapering posts add to the overall elegance while open panels on the footboard create a lighter airy feel. Intricate blackwork detail in the panels is the theme that follows through to the Bedroom Furniture along with the contrasting pear wood plaques.

Libby's Tips: Although most handmade beds made during the turn of the century would be either double beds or in certain cases king size beds, there would have been precious few super king size beds made. So if you want to create an Arts and Crafts bedroom with bedroom furniture and wardrobes and have the luxury of an original super king size bed you may find it very difficult. That is unless you are prepared to opt for a modern reproduction in the style of furniture from the Arts and Crafts movement. You can enjoy the luxury of super king size bed on a super king size memory foam mattress from the Revival mattress collection.
