Macintosh style brings fresh ideas to a bedroom makeover. The Mackintosh headboard is the most striking aspect of these big beds - it measures six feet tall and yet because of the open slat construction it still has an airy and balanced feel. You can also see our ‘little’ Mackintosh bed which is similar but it doesn’t have a tall headboard.
The Macintosh style bed pictured along with a bed side cabinet and a Wellington chest is polished in Oldwood wax. We've dressed the bed in a light cream coloured bedding to blend with the cream ceramic plaques that decorate the central slat of the headboard and footboard. A closer look shows the crackle technique used to glaze the plaques on both Macintosh big beds and the bedroom furniture.
Modern design is at the root of the Mackintosh Collection. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was the Scottish designer and architect whose work best traces the change in peoples tastes, needs and attitudes from the dark stoic Victorian 19th century to the fresh new challenges of the 20th and 21st century.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh although known for furniture design, is much more renowned for his architecture. The Glasgow School of Art building - "The Mackintosh Building" is regularly cited by architectural critics as among the very finest buildings in the UK.
The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society tries to encourage a greater awareness of the work of Charles Rennie Macintosh as an important architect, artist and designer.
So where does the influence for these big beds come form. The answer is the famous Argyle chair.
Libby's Tips: Of all the important things you take to make your bedroom feel relaxing and luxurious the colours you choose to paint your walls will have the biggest impact. Earthy, light tones work well because they make a room feel spacious.
This is important when you install large pieces of furniture like four poster beds and wardrobes. Dark furniture has the affect of sapping light and making a room feel smaller so pay attention to the finish you choose for these larger pieces of Charles Rennie Mackintosh furniture and big beds.
