The idea of a four poster bed dates back to when people all lived together in one room. In order for them to enjoy a little privacy drapes were hung around the bed from the roof beams. The forerunner of the four poster bed was known as the bed chamber and would be lavishly draped with beautiful imported textiles and tapestries. Often the textiles were more valuables than the actual bed.
